THURSDAY 26 JUNE
8.00pm
AN EVENING WITH...
The JOHN DANKWORTH QUINTET
The Large, Mill Hill School, NW7
One of Britain's best known jazz musicians and composers,
Sir John Dankworth continues to be a player of invention
and fire. Originally inspired by Benny Goodman, then
by altoists Johnny Hodges and Charlie Parker, he got
to play with, not only Goodman and Parker, but also
with Sidney Bechet, all in the space of one year.
Voted Musician of the Year in 1949, this was to be
the first of many awards. In 1950 he formed his first
group, and has become a father figure in British jazz,
with an international stature that has rightly grown
over the years, culminating in 2006 in being the first
jazz musician to receive a knighthood. His regular
group of pianist John Horler and two other previous
Festival performers, trombonist Mark Nightingale,
and bassist Alec Dankworth, are all outstanding musicians
in their own right, but with John they become even
better. Book early for an evening of great music.
Tickets:
£20. Cash bar. Doors open at 7.30pm.

TRIBUTE TO BUDDY RICH
THE STEVE TAYLOR BIG BAND
John Keble Hall, Deans Lane, Edgware, HA8
Steve brought his 17-piece big band to play at the Jazz
Club last year and it was standing room only! So this
time, we thought we might need a larger venue to accommodate
this mind blowing big band. The ensemble
takes its inspiration from works of the jazz greats
such as Buddy Rich and Maynard Ferguson. Drummer Steve
Taylor leads this inspirational and exciting outfit,
with Josie Frater on percussion and vocals. Steve
is a highly respected musician, multi-instrumentalist
and producer and is recognised as one of the most talented
drummers in the UK. - Rhythm Magazine
